Of all the world’s creatures, the mosquito is the greatest menace, threatening half the world’s population with deadly diseases. Malaria kills more than half a million people every year. That’s more than one death every minute. Dengue, yellow fever, and Japanese encephalitis kill and incapacitate tens of thousands more. When it comes to killing humans, no other animal is more deadly.

Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is optimistic we can strike back against these flying masters of mayhem, and even someday eradicate malaria.

THIS PARASITE HAS BEEN OUT THERE, KILLING CHILDREN AND SAPPING THE STRENGTH OF WHOLE POPULATIONS FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS. AND IT’S REALLY HARD TO CALCULATE THE HARM THAT MALARIA HAS DONE, OR EVEN IS DOING NOW. WE HAVE TO CHART A COURSE TO END THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL.
