Infectious Diseases Experts Are Working to Combat COVID-19

August 24, 2021

(Arlington, VA, Tuesday, August 24, 2021) – The FDA’s full approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine marks a pivotal milestone in the nation’s quest to control the effects of this pandemic. This approval is the culmination of intense, collaborative scientific research. The FDA’s announcement gives people who have not yet taken the vaccine additional assurance that this vaccine is safe and effective.

Research shows that the unvaccinated population makes up most of the COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

  • Currently, more than 90% of people that are dying from COVID-19 have not yet gotten the vaccine.
  • Current data suggest that COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use in the United States offer protection against most variants currently spreading in the United States.

There is a lot of information out there about the COVID-19 vaccine, including some scary stories on possible side effects. It can be difficult to determine what is true and what is not.

  • The science tells us the vaccines are effective and present only mild side effects such as headache, fever, and fatigue in most patients.
  • There is no evidence that fertility problems are a side effect of any vaccine.
  • COVID-19 vaccines do not change or interact with your DNA in any way.

Talk to your health care provider if you have additional questions about any of the vaccines. Visit idsociety.org for more information.
