(INTRO)

Every year, Floridians hit underground utility lines, injuring themselves, damaging equipment and sometimes causing power outages and environmental contamination.

Florida Power & Light’s Joseph Heatherly has some helpful tips if you’re planning an outdoor project this summer.

SAFETY IS OUR TOP PRIORITY. THERE ARE UNDERGROUND LINES THAT YOU MAY NOT EVEN SUSPECT ARE THERE AND IF YOU HIT ONE OF THEM, WHETHER YOU’RE USING A BULLDOZER OR A SHOVEL, IT CAN BE DANGEROUS. STAY SAFE WITH ONE FREE CALL TO 8-1-1. CALL AT LEAST TWO BUSINESS DAYS BEFORE YOU START DIGGING SO UTILITIES IN YOUR AREA CAN MARK THE APPROXIMATE LOCATION AND TYPE OF UNDERGROUND LINES, PIPES AND CABLES WITH FLAGS OR PAINT. THE PROCESS IS FREE, EASY AND IT IS REQUIRED BY LAW.
