(Seattle, WA, Friday, October 22, 2021) – Today, Climate Pledge Arena – located at Seattle’s historic Seattle Center and home to the latest NHL expansion team the Seattle Kraken – is officially open. Set to be the most progressive, responsible and sustainable arena in the world, the arena is mobilizing the largest coordinated effort of fan engagement around climate of any sports team.

Climate Pledge Arena plans to become the first International Living Future Institute certified zero carbon arena in the world. The prestigious certification will be achieved through commitment to being carbon zero, eliminating single use plastics, water conservation and zero waste.

The arena will feature unique sustainable features such as:

  • Converting fossil fuel consumption in the arena for daily use to electric, including mechanical systems like Zambonis, gas combustion engines, heating, dehumidification, and cooking.
  • Leveraging solar panels on rooftops combined with off-site supplementary renewable energy for 100% renewable energy power.
  • Reducing all carbon emission activities and offsetting those that cannot – like transportation – by purchasing credible carbon offsets.
  • Using a “Rain to Rink” system that harvests rainwater off the roof, collects it into a 15,000-gallon cistern, and turns it into the greenest ice in the NHL.
  • The first arena and NHL Team to announce their intention to eliminate single use plastics within the venue starting in 2021 and being 100% free of single-use plastics by 2024.
  • Locally sourcing 75% of food ingredients within a 300-mile radius.

Soundbites – Jason McLennan, Sustainability Expert for Climate Pledge Arena

  • WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO TRY TO LIMIT OUR IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND THAT INCLUDES AT SPORT AND MUSIC EVENTS. THAT’S WHY CLIMATE PLEDGE ARENA IS FOCUSED ON BEING THE MOST SUSTAINABLE ARENA IN THE WORLD—IT’S POWERED COMPLETELY BY RENEWABLE ENERGY, USING NO NATURAL GAS, OFFSETS ALL OF ITS OPERATIONAL CARBON, SPORTS A LIVING WALL WITH OVER EIGHT THOUSAND PLANTS AND PLANS TO PHASE OUT ALL SINGLE-USE PLASTICS BY TWENTY TWENTY-FOUR.
  • THE ENTRY PAVILION TO THE HISTORIC ROOF AND OUR ADJACENT PARKING GARAGE HAVE BEEN OUTFITTED WITH HUNDREDS OF SOLAR PANELS, GENERATING ONE POINT TWO MEGAWATTS OF ENERGY! THIS IS ENOUGH ENERGY TO POWER DOZENS OF HOMES!
  • IN SEATTLE, WE GET AN AVERAGE OF THIRTY-SEVEN INCHES OF RAINFALL EACH YEAR, SO WE’RE COLLECTING THAT RAINWATER FROM THE ROOF AND USING IT TO RESURFACE THE ICE ON OUR RINK. THIS MEANS SEATTLE KRAKEN PLAYERS WILL BE SKATING ON THE GREENEST ICE IN THE LEAGUE.
  • ONE OF THE BIGGEST CONTRIBUTORS TO CARBON EMISSIONS IS TRANSPORTATION, SO THE KRAKEN IS PROVIDING FREE PUBLIC TRANSIT FOR ALL SEASON TICKET MEMBERS FOR ALL HOME GAMES.
