(INTRO)

July 4th is more than fireworks and backyard cookouts. It’s a high-boating traffic holiday with thousands of people out on the water enjoying the sun and some R&R. Each year approximately five-hundred people drown from recreational boating accidents.

Rachel Johnson, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council, says boaters should be focused on safety and always wear their life jackets. She says the ‘Wear It!’ campaign is a simple life-saving strategy for recreational boating.

(JOHNSON)

THERE’S NO EXCUSE NOT TO WEAR A LIFE JACKET. NO MATTER HOW GOOD A SWIMMER YOU ARE, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHILE YOU’RE BOATING. ACCIDENTS HAPPEN MUCH TOO FAST TO PUT ON A STOWED LIFE JACKET. YOU CAN STILL HAVE FUN ON THE WATER WHILE ALSO CHOOSING TO ALWAYS WEAR A LIFE JACKET AND BOAT RESPONSIBLY.

As you head out on the water, remember to boat responsibly and always remember to wear your life jacket. For more information, visit SafeBoatingCampaign.com.
