(Washington D.C., Tuesday, November 7, 2017) – Obesity is a chronic condition that affects more than 1 in 3 adults and nearly 17% of children in the United States. Another 1 in 3 adults is overweight.

NIH research has shown that on average people gain less than 1 pound between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. But over time, the pounds can begin to add up.

The NIDDK is promoting the theme, You Can Achieve Better Health Today. Tomorrow. For Life. Dr. Rodgers will encourage people to take small steps to improve their lifestyle habits during the holiday season and throughout the new year. Messages will focus on “doable” activities during the holiday season (e.g., moderation, planning for healthy meals, and tips for reducing inactivity). He will also discuss the relationship between obesity, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease.
