Over the next five years, the U.S. is expected to add up to 1.3 million jobs that depend on competencies in science, technology, engineering, and math – or “STEM.”   If current trends continue, America is only prepared to fill 70 percent of these positions.

Lou DiGioia, executive director of MATHCOUNTS, says the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition — the “national spelling bee for mathletes” — is answering that call, bringing together students from every U.S. state and territory to compete in advanced mathematics while instilling a passion for math and science.

U.S. INDUSTRY FACES A CRITICAL NEED FOR EMPLOYEES WITH ADVANCED MATH SKILLS. IN AN ERA WHEN MANY PEOPLE NEED THEIR SMART PHONE TO CALCULATE A RESTAURANT TIP, IT’S CLEAR THAT WE ALL NEED TO DO MORE TO HELP PREPARE TODAY’S STUDENTS FOR TOMORROW’S CAREERS. IT’S IMPORTANT THAT WE HELP KIDS GAIN ENTHUSIASM FOR PROBLEM SOLVING WHILE BUILDING CRITICAL-THINKING SKILLS TO SET THEM ON THE RIGHT TRACK FOR THE FUTURE.
