A new survey finds that U.S. veterans say their military service is the top factor in landing a job. And, those who find a civilian position in the same field as their military service make more money.  However, unemployment for post-9/11 veterans, especially those under 25, is higher than the national rate and the survey showed that translating military skills to civilian jobs is the number one challenge for today’s veterans.

Steve Rohleder, Health & Public Service group chief executive for Accenture, explains what veterans need.

(ROHLEDER)

VETERANS OFFER EMPLOYERS SUPERIOR SKILLS AND AN OUTSTANDING WORK ETHIC. HOWEVER, WITH 260,000 SERVICE MEMBERS A YEAR EXPECTED TO SEPARATE FROM THE MILITARY, OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS, THE NATIONAL CHALLENGE WILL BE HELPING THEM TRANSLATE THEIR MILITARY EXPERIENCE TO PRIVATE-SECTOR JOBS. THAT’S WHY WE ARE CONDUCTING WORKSHOPS, ACROSS THE COUNTRY, WITH THE US CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FOUNDATION TO HELP VETERANS WITH RESUME WRITING AND INTERVIEWING SKILLS.
