(Indianapolis, IN, Tuesday, December 20, 2022) – It’s no surprise that the holidays can be stressful for veterans and place even more pressure on those with mental health concerns. In fact, 64% of people with mental illness say the holidays make their condition worse. Military suicide rates also increase at this time of year due to the unique challenges that veterans face during the holidays. The American Legion is asking Americans to ‘Be the One’ to check in on a veteran this holiday season, connect them with resources and learn how you can support them.
M. David Rudd, Ph.D., ABPP, former president of the University of Memphis and Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and Director of the Rudd Institute for Veteran and Military Suicide Prevention, discusses The American Legion’s “Be the One” campaign, explain why the holidays are difficult for veterans and active-duty military, talk about ways to combat veteran suicide and share resources for those struggling and those who want to help.
