(Washington, D.C., Wednesday, March 27, 2019) – Many families are now stepping away from work and school to spend quality time together during Spring Break. Whether hanging out on the patio, riding in a car, or just walking through a park, each of these activities provides an opportunity for parents and caregivers to answer those tough questions kids often ask about underage drinking and substance misuse.
Young people want and deserve sound answers to these critical questions. The “Talk. They Hear You.” campaign sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provides easy and actionable guidance and information for use in answering these tough questions.
Research suggests that one of the most important factors in healthy child development is a strong, open relationship with a parent or trusted caregiver. In fact, over 80 percent of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether or not to drink.
Some of the tough questions that can be addressed are: Why do you drink? Did you drink when you were a kid? You drink alcohol, so why can’t I? What if my friends ask me to try marijuana?
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA’s mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities.
