Patients from children’s hospitals across the country are meeting with Congressional leaders to encourage them to improve Medicaid to ensure timely access to pediatric specialists and coordinated care for children with medical complexity. Families of seriously ill children are in Washington, D.C. for “Speak Now for Kids Family Advocacy Day,” an annual event hosted by the Children’s Hospital Association.
Amarilis Franjul, mom of four-year-old Amarey Brookshire who has sickle cell disease, describes how Medicaid helps her daughter get the treatment she needs.
(FRANJUL)
WHEN YOU FIRST MEET MY DAUGHTER YOU WOULD NEVER KNOW THIS ENERGETIC LITTLE GIRL LIVES WITH SICKLE CELL DISEASE. WHEN AMAREY GETS SICK, SHE HAS TERRIBLE PAIN IN HER LEGS, ARMS AND BELLY. AND WHEN HER HEMOGLOBIN DROPS SHE REQUIRES A BLOOD TRANSFUSION. WITHOUT MEDICAID, AMAREY WOULD NOT RECEIVE THE PROMPT CARE NEEDED DURING HER VUNERABLE STAGE.
