Dear PSA Director,

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s veiled threats to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine is a horrifying act of blackmail. It contradicts his own admission that “there can be no winners in a nuclear war, and it should never be unleashed.”

Russia’s threat to nuke Ukraine deserves to be thoroughly condemned. Morally and legally, there are no conditions under which the use of a nuclear weapon can ever be justified by any country. Regardless of its size,  a single nuclear weapon would cause long-term human and environmental harm and could set in motion a rapid escalation to planetary annihilation.

The United States  must respond with diplomacy to deescalate and pull us back from the threat of a nuclear Armageddon. Dialogue with Russia is not capitulation or appeasement; it is the only sane response to the insanity of nuclear brinkmanship.

Both Russia and the United States already have more than enough nuclear bombs to blow planet apart many times over. It must not use even one.

The war in Ukraine has already taken too great a toll on civilian life and the global economy. It will only come to an end through sustained, serious, and skillful diplomacy – not through a nuclear bomb.
