(INTRO)

Counterfeit software will infect one in three personal computers with malware this year, according to a global IDC study released today in conjunction with Microsoft’s “Play It Safe” campaign. The global initiative calls attention to the problem of piracy worldwide and emphasizes the importance of using legitimate software to businesses and consumers.

Bonnie MacNaughton, Assistant General Counsel who oversees North American anti-piracy efforts for the tech company, explains the risks associated with downloading or buying counterfeit software.

(MACNAUGHTON)

USING PIRATED SOFTWARE NOT ONLY INCREASES THE RISK OF EXPOSURE TO VIRUSES AND DATA LOSS, BUT CAN ALSO RESULT IN A LOT OF WASTED TIME AND MONEY.  IN 2013, CONSUMERS WILL SPEND AN ESTIMATED $22 BILLION DEALING WITH SECURITY ISSUES FROM COUNTERFEIT SOFTWARE. CONSUMERS CAN PROTECT THEMSELVES BY ENSURING THAT THEIR SUPPLIER PROVIDES THEM WITH GENUINE SOFTWARE.
