(San Francisco, CA, Wednesday, March 6, 2019) – Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death overall in the United States and affects 5.7 million Americans. According to experts, this number may nearly triple to a projected 14 million people by 2050.

The Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, known as the “ADNI Study,” is funded by the National Institutes of Health and focused on identifying Alzheimer’s disease in the brain and tracking its progression over time. The Study is seeking volunteers ages 55 to 90 who have mild memory problems, as well as those who have been diagnosed with mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Michael Weiner, internationally recognized Alzheimer’s expert, leads the Study.

SOUNDBITE #1:

WE ARE IN A CRISIS. ALZHEIMER’S KILLS MORE PEOPLE THAN BREAST CANCER AND PROSTATE CANCER COMBINED. WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE PROGRESSION OF THIS DISEASE IN ORDER TO SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE WAY WE DETECT AND TREAT IT IN THE FUTURE.

SOUNDBITE #2:

OUR WORK HAS ALREADY LED TO BETTER METHODS FOR THE DETECTION OF ALZHEIMER’S AND MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT—OFTEN A PRECURSOR TO ALZHEIMER’S, BUT THERE’S STILL MORE TO LEARN. WE NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HOW THIS DISEASE AFFECTS THE AGING BRAIN OVER TIME, SO THAT WE CAN BETTER PREVENT, TREAT AND, ONE DAY, CURE THIS DISEASE.
