Robin Poor Bear, FEATURED in Kind Hearted Woman
(San Francisco, CA, Thursday, March 28, 2013) – David Sutherland’s Kind Hearted Woman, a two part series premieres Monday and Tuesday April 1 and 2 at 9 p.m. on PBS’s FRONTLINE. The series creates a portrait of Poor Bear, a 32-year-old divorced single mother and Oglala Sioux woman living on North Dakota’s Spirit Lake Reservation.
Sutherland follows Poor Bear over three years as she struggles to raise her two children, further her education and heal herself from the wounds of sexual abuse she suffered as a child. She confronts the after effects of the sexual abuse and fights to keep her family together through a custody battle with her ex-husband over their two children, all while pursuing a college degree and career as a social worker.
Poor Bear’s ultimate emergence as a powerful public speaker on abuse provides a final sign of her growing emotional health and personal triumph as both a professional and a mother. She was also the Sunday Feature in the New York Times on March 24.
