(Washington, D.C., Thursday, February 17, 2022) – In the coming weeks, the president will release his Nuclear Posture Review, which will give him an opportunity to make major changes to our nuclear weapons policy.
The upcoming Nuclear Posture Review is the president’s opportunity to step back from the brink of war, advance arms control, and position the United States as a leader in the effort to create a more peaceful world. The Friends Committee on National Legislation stands alongside 56 members of Congress and a coalition of over 20 interfaith groups and churches.
The president has made previous commitments to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy. Biden has stated “nuclear war cannot ever be won and must never be fought.”
The President must follow through with his commitment to reduce the role of nuclear weapons.
The review is taking place as tensions grow with Russia over Ukraine. Tensions between two nuclear armed nations increases the risk of sudden escalation and stumbling into a much larger conflict.
Combined, Russia and the United States control more than 90% of global nuclear weapons (roughly 11,807 out of 13,082).
The United States, Russia, and the other members of the P5, all recently agreed that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought, and yet we’re still looking to spend a trillion dollars on upgrades to our nuclear stockpile.
