(Menlo Park, CA, Thursday, August 13, 2020) – With US elections less than three months away, Facebook continues to power the largest voting information campaign in American history. The platform’s new Voting Information Center, which appears at the top of people’s Facebook and Instagram feeds beginning today, will reach an estimated 160 million people through November, sharing accurate information about voting, including the tools they need to register and vote, details on vote by mail, early voting and voting on Election Day. As previously announced, the company aims to register four million voters this year, using Facebook, Instagram and Messenger—double the estimated two million people Facebook helped register in both 2018 and 2016.
The Voting Information Center is a one-stop shop on Facebook and Instagram where people can get authoritative information on the 2020 elections. Facebook continues to work with state election officials and other experts to ensure the hub accurately reflects the latest information in each state:
- Official information about registering to vote or checking registration status.
- Official information about how to vote by mail, including requesting an absentee or mail-in ballot.
- Election alerts from each state election official about changes to the voting process.
- Facts about voting to help prevent and address confusion about the voting process.
The information highlighted will change to reflect the current phase of the election, meaning it will highlight registering to vote ahead of deadlines, deadlines to request a vote-by-mail ballot and when to mail it back, the start of early voting, and Election Day details. In future updates, the following will be included:
- Official information about options for early voting in-person, including dates/times and early voting poll locations.
- Official information about how to vote on Election Day, including dates/times, poll locations, and what a person needs to bring (ID requirements).
- Updates on Election Night and the days that follow, which is critical since experts note election results could take time to finalize due to the extended process of counting mail-in ballots.
In March, Facebook created the COVID-19 Information Center, which has been providing trusted information from health authorities about the pandemic. Now they are using the same approach to help people vote in the coming election. The pandemic has forced many states to make changes to voting, creating uncertainty in the minds of some voters and opportunities for election interference. In fact, in a survey of potential voters, Facebook found that 62 percent said they believe people will need more information on how to vote in November than in previous elections. Having built some of the most advanced systems in the world to combat election interference, the Voting Information Center is another line of defense. By getting clear, accurate, and authoritative information to people, the effectiveness of malicious networks that might try to interfere is reduced.
