More than 11,000 of the world’s top cancer doctors and scientists gathered at the 56th annual meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. This year’s theme for the four-day event, September 14-17, was “Targeting Cancer: Technology & Biology” and highlighted how technology and biology advance the field and improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
Dr. Carol Hahn, Chair of ASTRO’s Clinical Affairs and Quality Council and associate professor of radiation oncology at Duke University describes a campaign called “Choosing Wisely” where radiation oncologists involve their patients in the decision making process of future therapy and treatment.

THE INITIATIVE OF THE ABIM’S CAMPAIGN, CHOOSING WISELY, IS TO PROMOTE CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN PATIENTS AND PROVIDERS ON EVIDENCE BASED CARE, AND THE BENEFITS TO PATIENTS ARE TO ENGAGE THEM IN A PATIENT CENTERED CARE EXPERIENCE, TO BECOME INVOLVED IN THEIR CARE PROCESS, TO EMPOWER THEM TO HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT TESTING PROCEDURES MIGHT BE APPROPRIATE, COMING FROM A MEDICAL SPECIALTY WITH EXPERTISE IN THIS AREA.
