(INTRO)

A new report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Urban Institute, finds that the Affordable Care Act will have a major impact on the uninsured population of major U.S. cities, and an even larger one if all states expand who’s eligible for Medicaid.

The Foundation’s Dr. John Lumpkin discusses the report findings.

(LUMPKIN)

WE LOOKED AT HEALTH REFORM’S IMPACT IN SEVEN CITIES THAT ARE LOCATED IN STATES THAT HAVEN’T EXPANDED MEDICAID. IF THEY DID, WITHIN TWO YEARS, NEARLY A MILLION MORE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE. IF MEDICAID EXPANDED IN EVERY STATE, MILLIONS OF OTHER UNINSURED AMERICANS WOULD HAVE ACCESS TO FREE OR LOW-COST HEALTH INSURANCE, AND THERE ARE HUGE FINANCIAL CONSEQUENCES. IF MEDICAID IS EXPANDED IN JUST THE SEVEN CITIES WE LOOKED AT, THOSE CITIES WOULD GAIN Sixty Two BILLION DOLLARS IN NEW FEDERAL SPENDING.
