November is National Family Caregivers Month.

More than 1.6 million Tennesseans care for aging parents and spouses who want to stay at home, instead of costly institutions. These family caregivers provide unpaid services valued at about $11 billion annually. Peter Rosenberger has cared for his wife for 29 years. He says…

[PETER ROSENBERGER]: MY WIFE’S CAR WRECK COST HER BOTH LEGS AND NEARLY 80 OPERATIONS. FROM MANAGING MEDICATIONS; DOING WOUND CARE; GIVING INJECTIONS; RUNNING THE HOUSE, COOKING, LAUNDRY, TRANSPORTATION; GROCERY SHOPPING, I HAVE DONE IT ALL, AND CONTINUE TO DO SO. BEING MARRIED TO A WOMAN WITH SEVERE DISABILITIES AND CHRONIC PAIN HAS HELPED ME LEARN A LOT ABOUT COURAGE AND THE ENDURING POWER OF LOVE.

This week, A-A-R-P launched I Heart Caregivers to collect stories like Peter’s.  AARP Tennessee Associate State Director Tara Shaver says…

[TARA SHAVER]: OUR SILENT ARMY OF FAMILY CAREGIVERS HELPS SENIORS TO LIVE INDEPENDENTLY, WITH DIGNITY, EACH AND EVERY DAY. WE WANT TO HONOR THESE UNSUNG HEROES – WHILE AT THE SAME TIME FIGHT TO GET THEM MORE SUPPORT, TRAINING, HELP AT HOME.
