(Washington, DC, Tuesday, October 4, 2022) – October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and this year, DAV (Disabled American Veterans) is urging employers to take notice of veterans and the unique qualities they offer the workplace. There are nearly 4 million veterans with a service-connected disability. DAV is connecting these veterans, as well as their spouses and active-duty service members, to meaningful employment so they can create more victories in their careers.
One way DAV is connecting veterans and their spouses to meaningful employment opportunities at no cost is through hosting virtual and in-person career fairs nationwide. In addition to career fairs, DAV offers free job-seeking advice and resources, from tips on dressing for an online interview to best practices for resume writing and job board search. In 2022, 3,377 exhibitors extended more than 5,970 job offers to the more than 10,600 veterans and spouses who attended.
In addition to career fairs, the veteran service organization launched DAV Patriot Boot Camp. This program helps veterans, military members and spouses become creators, innovators and entrepreneurs The program has supported virtual boot camp programs for more than 1,000 entrepreneurs to date. Its alumni have raised more than $150 million in venture capital and employ over 1,900 individuals. In addition, 67% of DAV Patriot Boot Camp alums have a service-connected disability.
Veterans are among the most resilient members of society, and they bring that resilience to everything they do, making them especially invaluable in the workplace.
