Dear PSA Director,
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss among older Americans, affecting more than 11 million people. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of irreversible blindness in working-age Americans, affecting nearly 8 million people.
Retinal disease can steal your vision, but it doesn’t have to. The American Society of Retina Specialists has launched an awareness campaign urging the public to know the risk factors for retinal disease, learn the signs and symptoms, and see a retina specialist in a timely manner to have the best chance of preventing vision loss from AMD or diabetic retinopathy.
Symptoms of AMD include distortion or warping of straight lines as well as blurred or loss of central vision. Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy include the appearance of spots or floaters or blurred and distorted vision.
Through ASRS’s public service announcements, the public will learn what retinal disease symptoms to watch for and the importance of seeking early treatment from a retina specialist. By doing so, Americans can safeguard their sight and See for a Lifetime. More information is available at SeeForaLifetime.org.
Thank you for your support of this important awareness-raising campaign!
