More than 11,000 of the world’s top cancer doctors and scientists gathered at the 55th annual meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in Atlanta. This year’s theme of the four-day event, starting Monday, September 22, is “Patients: Hope, Guide, Heal,” focused on quality, safety and patient-centered care.

Dr. Arjun Sahgal, associate professor of radiation oncology at the University of Toronto, outlines data supporting the benefits of using a single, high dose of radiation to treat brain cancer.

SO FOR THE PERSON WHOSE CANCER HAS SPREAD TO THE BRAIN AND THEY’VE DEVELOPED SOME BRAIN METASTASIS I THINK WHAT THESE DATA DO IS THEY SAY THAT YOU’RE NOT NECESSARILY AT RISK OF MORE BRAIN TUMORS COMING UP AND IF YOU GO FOR A FOCAL TREATMENT WITHOUT HAVING TO GO THROUGH THE TOXICITIES FOR WHOLE BRAIN RADIATION YOU MAY DO VERY WELL.  IN FACT YOU MAY LIVE LONGER BACAUSE YOU DID GO FOR FOCAL THERAPY AS OPPOSED TO THE OLDER WAY OF GIVING RADIATION WHICH WAS BASICALLY BLANKETING THE WHOLE BRAIN WITH RADIATION.
