Experts presenting key abstracts during Digestive Disease Week

Digestive Disease Week showcases more than 5,000 abstracts submitted from around the world.

Some of the key abstracts presented this year include:

• What’s the relationship between the microbiome and food allergies? Which affects which? – presented by Dr. Alessio Fasano, Director of the Center for Celiac Research at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children
• Research on how lean patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease may have poorer prognoses than obese patients – presented by Dr. Paul Angulo, Professor of Medicine and Section Chief of Hepatology in the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition at the University of Kentucky Medical Center
• A discussion on how smart phones, texting, emails and apps are affecting communications between patients and providers – presented by Dr. Ashish Atreja, Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology and Director of the Informatics for Research, Outcomes, and Quality Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York
• Variability in detection of precancerous adenomas suggests the need for better detection techniques for colonoscopists and pathologists – presented by Dr. William Karnes, Associate Clinical Professor at University of California – Irvine
• A combined surgical/endoscopic method to remove polyps may save the health-care system millions of dollars – presented by Dr. Jonathan Buscaglia, associate professor of medicine and director of advanced endoscopy at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in Long Island, New York
• New treatments for hepatitis C have remarkable cure rates of more than 90 percent – presented by Dr. Ira Jacobson, chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell Campus
