(INTRO)

Scientific findings can change the way we live. But before researchers can make discoveries, they must develop a foundational knowledge through basic science research.

Dr. Jerrold Turner, Editor of the AGA journal Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, discusses the scientific investigations presented at this year’s Digestive Disease Week in Chicago.

BASIC RESEARCH IS THE FOUNDATION UPON WHICH TRANSLATIONAL AND CLINICAL ADVANCES ARE BUILT. THE BASIC SCIENCE PLENARY SESSION PROVIDES EXAMPLES OF RECENT WORK THAT STRENGTHENS AND EVEN REMODELS THIS FOUNDATION.  THREE OF THE STUDIES PROVIDE NEW INSIGHT INTO THE ROLES OF IMMUNE SIGNALING, EPITHELIAL BARRIER FUNCTION, AND GENE REGULATION IN COLITIS. OTHER PRESENTATIONS HIGHLIGHT ADVANCES IN STEM CELL REGULATION IN THE STOMACH AND PANCREAS. THIS WORK HAS SIGNIFICANT IMPLICATIONS FOR ULCER DISEASE, DIABETES, AND CANCER. EACH OF THESE STUDIES PROVIDES NEW UNDERSTANDING OF MOLECULAR MECHANISMS, WHICH IS THE KEY TO DEVELOPING NEW THERAPIES.
