Decision Delivered Yesterday in Federal Court in New York City

Brad Smith, President and Chief Legal Officer, Microsoft

(Redmond, WA, Friday, July 15, 2016) – A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of Microsoft in its challenge of a US search warrant seeking a customer’s email content located in Ireland. In a case with big implications for redefining your privacy protections online, Microsoft argued the government should use existing treaties that allow law enforcement agencies to exchange information across borders. Microsoft has also promised to advocate for more modern laws that improve the government’s ability to get this kind of evidence quickly without lessening people’s privacy rights.
