Republicans and Democrats are Coming Together to Reduce the Number of Children Dying Under the Age of Five
Gary Cohen, Executive Vice President, Becton Dickinson, & Acting CEO
(Washing D.C., Tuesday, June 24, 2014) – At a time when bipartisanship seems a thing of the past, Republicans and Democrats are coming together to celebrate cooperation between multiple administrations and Congressional leaders that has helped cut in half the annual number of deaths of children under five since 1990. As a result of U.S. investment in foreign aid six million fewer children will die before their fifth birthday than did just 25 years ago.
In just 12 short years, annual deaths from preventable diseases have fallen remarkably:
- Pneumonia: 700,000 fewer children died
- Diarrhea: 600,000 fewer children died
- Measles: 400,000 fewer children died
- Malaria: 300,000 fewer children died
- AIDS: 100,000 fewer children died
The 5th Birthday and Beyond Coalition, made up of more than 100 businesses, NGOs, faith-based, civic and philanthropic organizations will gather to celebrate 25 years of truly bipartisan support for critical global development programs with a Capitol Hill reception on Wednesday, June 25 at 5:00 p.m. in the Kennedy Caucus Room. Additionally these leaders will change their profile pictures on social media to a photo of their 5th birthday. These 5th birthday photos show support for continued commitment to global children’s health across the social media space.
