While the country is focused on “Obamacare” and federal and state-run exchanges, where individuals can shop for insurance plans, a new report from Accenture estimates that roughly one-out-of-five Americans will purchase their health benefits from an “exchange” in the next three years.

Rich Birhanzel, managing director of Accenture Health Administration Services, explains the findings.

ALTHOUGH MORE THAN 80 PERCENT OF U.S. CONSUMERS ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH EMPLOYER’S USING PRIVATE EXCHANGES FOR HEALTH BENEFITS, ACCENTURE ESTIMATES TOTAL ENROLLMENT WILL RISE TO 40 MILLION AND SURPASS STATE AND FEDERALLY FUNDED PUBLIC EXCHANGES, AS EARLY AS 2018, AS EMPLOYERS SEEK LOWER-COST OPTIONS FOR EMPLOYEE HEALTHCARE.  BUT, THE ISSUE RIGHT NOW IS A LACK OF CONSUMER READINESS. AS OVER ONE MILLION EMPLOYEES ENROLL IN EXCHANGES THIS YEAR, THEY’LL NEED TO BE EQUIPPED FOR MAKING DECISIONS THAT MANY WILL ENCOUNTER FOR THE FIRST TIME.
