More than 11,000 of the world’s top cancer doctors and scientists gathered at the 55th annual meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in Atlanta. This year’s theme of the four-day event, starting Monday, September 22, is “Patients: Hope, Guide, Heal,” focused on quality, safety and patient-centered care.
Dr. Vinai Gondi, co-director from the Cadence Health Brain Tumor Center in Chicago, IL, outlines his study results regarding radiotherapy on the brain.

OUR STUDY SHOWED THAT WE CAN USE SOPHISTICATED RADIOTHERAPY TECHNIQUES TO MINIMIZE RADIATION DOSE TO THE MEMORY STRUCTURES IN THE BRAIN WHILE TREATING BRAIN TUMORS WITH RADIOTHERAPY. IN SO DOING WE SHOWED THAT WE CAN PRESERVE MEMORY FUNCTION AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN OUR BRAIN TUMOR PATIENTS.
