(Washington D.C., Wednesday, December 21, 2016) – On the heels of one of the busiest forecasted Thanksgivings for air travel, Airlines for America is projecting 45.2 million people will travel globally on U.S. airlines during the winter travel period, which is approximately 73,000 more passengers per day than last year.
With daily flight volumes expected to range from 1.8 to 2.4 million passengers between Friday, Dec. 16 and Thursday, Jan. 5., airlines are planning to offer 99,000 more seats per day through the use of larger planes and additional flights. When it comes to handling the growth in holiday travel this year, airlines will be more than ready to accommodate the millions of passengers who are looking forward to spending time with their friends and families.
The top 10 busiest airports for holiday and New Year’s travel to be Atlanta, Chicago’s O’Hare, Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Charlotte, Houston, New York’s JFK, San Francisco and Phoenix.
Kathy Allen, Spokesperson, Airlines for America, discusses traveling during this busy holiday season.
AS WE SAW OVER THANKSGIVING, WHEN AIRLINES COMPLETED MORE THAN NINETY-NINE PERCENT OF THEIR SCHEDULED FLIGHTS AND POSTED AN ON-TIME ARRIVAL RATE OF NEARLY EIGHTY-FIVE PERCENT, U.S. AIRLINES ARE WELL POSITIONED TO HANDLE THE INCREASE IN PASSENGERS EXPECTED THIS HOLIDAY SEASON. BARRING ANY UNFORESEEN WEATHER EVENTS, AIRLINES’ CONCERTED AND WELL-COORDINATED EFFORTS WILL HELP ENSURE THE TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY RUSH IS AS SMOOTH AND EFFICIENT AS CAN BE FOR THE MILLIONS OF PASSENGERS EAGER TO CELEBRATE WITH THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES.
AS WITH EVERY FLIGHT AND ESPECIALLY DURING THE HOLIDAY TRAVEL SEASON, IT’S IMPORTANT TO STAY INFORMED. THE BEST WAY TO DO THAT IS BY DOWNLOADING YOUR CARRIER’S MOBILE APP, WHICH WILL PROVIDE THE MOST UP-TO-DATE FLIGHT AND ARRIVAL INFORMATION. WE ALSO RECOMMEND CHECKING TSA’S WEBSITE FOR DETAILS ON WHAT YOU CAN AND CANNOT PACK - REMEMBER, WRAPPED GIFTS RUN THE RISK OF BEING UNWRAPPED FOR SCREENING. GIVE YOURSELF EXTRA TIME TO GET TO THE AIRPORT AND GET THROUGH SECURITY AND CHECK-IN AHEAD OF TIME ON YOUR COMPUTER OR SMART PHONE.
